The Bahamas is a country rich in history. After all, these islands were the first point of the colonisation of…
Read MoreThe Bahamas is so much more than sun, sand and sea. There is even more to do than eating and drinking all the local cuisine. To truly get a good understanding of the Bahamian culture, you have to experience Bahamian art. The country is filled with talented artists and artisans who are always finding new ways to tell our stories. Honestly, from abstract paintings to realism, there is something for everyone. Most of the art galleries are in New Providence, but there are galleries throughout The Bahamas. If you can, visit them all. However, if that task seems challenging there are a few art galleries you have to visit in Nassau.
Announced in 1996, the first institution of its kind, The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas was founded in 2003. The gallery is at the Villa Doyle mansion, which was originally built in the 1860s. As the leading art gallery in The Bahamas, the NAGB takes pride in offering a space for Bahamian talent to display their thought-provoking pieces. The property is extensive and is home to Fiona’s Theatre, where many Bahamians have showcased their musical, culinary and artistic talents. There is also a sculpture garden filled with local Bahamian plants and art pieces for nature lovers. If you are visiting soon, be sure to check out their current exhibitions “Pulse” and “Medicine and Memory: Public Health in The Bahamas.”
Located in the Grand Hyatt, The Current Gallery and Art Center at Baha Mar has certainly cemented itself among Bahamian art galleries. Focused on contemporary fine art, this gallery showcases mainly paintings and photography pieces. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed opening nights of some extremely talented Bahamian artists, namely Jodi Minnis, Navarro Newton and June Collie at this gallery. The Current also has a great gift shop where you can find junkanoo pieces, bags, shirts and other crafty items. Don’t be surprised if you happen to see a class or other art centric activities while visiting.
Nassau’s newest art gallery is Tern Gallery. This art gallery is located at The Island House and just opened last month with its inaugural exhibition, “Inherited Values”. I got to visit this show and was completely blown away by one of the pieces. As soon as you enter, a large chandelier hangs from the ceiling, initially it looks liked candles but as you come closer you can tell that it is sugar apple. While, this is already amazing, I found out that it was made from candy. Tern’s goal is to showcase Bahamian talent on an international stage and I certainly think this exhibition was a excellent way to start.
If you have an interest in Bahamian art and culture, be sure to check out any on these breathtaking art galleries on your next trip to Nassau. Have you checked out our latest post as yet?
